Advocate and support health care system changes to reduce EMS offload delays in area hospitals.

Successful ongoing collaboration with the hospitals and CCAC has resulted in sustained improvements in offload delay. This work will need to be ongoing so we can continue to be vigilant. Significant gains have been made in the last 2 years. 

EMS continues to work diligently with community stakeholders and especially the area Emergency Departments to try and reduce offload delay and return our resources to the road. The following chart will identify the 24 hour  ambulance days lost to offload over the indicated year:

  • 2010: 242.9
  • 2011: 292.9 
  • 2012: 316.2
  • 2013: 144.3
  • 2014: 120.8 Year to date (January through August)

As can be seen from the data we continue to make strides in a positive direction and work to maintain the gains. We current sit at almost 1/3 of the total offloads lost compared to the highest loss point in 2012

Progress Update (September 2013)

Ongoing collaboration with local area hospitals to reduce offload delay have been successful. Ongoing collaboration is taking place with the Local Health Integration Network on projects where we have an overlap in mandates, for example falls prevention strategy.

Progress Update (January 2013)

EMS continues ongoing advocacy with hospital senior administrators, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) and Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) to support health care system changes to reduce EMS offload delays in area hospitals. Year to date, Offload Delays have stabilized at 2011 levels.

  • Reduction in number and duration of offload delays
  • Reduction in number and duration of Code Yellow and Red instances
  • Reduction in low priority returns to hospital
