Work with area municipalities and community partners to develop a Seniors' Strategy that actively supports the well-being of older adults.

greenstatusFinal update (September 2014)
Council endorsed the Region of Waterloo Seniors' Strategy, which includes a variety of recommendations to support older adults. These actions will help ensure the Region of Waterloo continues to deliver our programs and services in an age-friendly manner. The strategy was developed by the Region of Waterloo Seniors' Advisory Committee, which consists of citizens, community partners and Regional staff and was endorsed by Regional Council in August of 2014

In addition to 30 recommendations, the strategy also includes an Age Friendly Lens.   The Lens was developed to help staff understand how people’s needs may change as they age, and is a tool that can be used to assess the age-friendliness of the Region’s programs, services and service delivery. Many of the recommendations are in progress.  Some recommendations will require costing and implementation planning by the lead department when funding opportunities arise

Progress Update (September 2013)

The departmental review that identified Regional programs and services that contribute to an age-friendly community was completed in Spring 2013. The Seniors Advisory Committee is presently using the results of the community consultation and the departmental review to develop the Seniors' Strategy recommendations and it is expected that this work will be complete in November, 2013. The Seniors Advisory Committee intends to present the Seniors' Strategy to Council for their consideration in early spring, 2014.

Progress Update (January 2013)

The Region of Waterloo Seniors' Strategy is in the early stages of development. The strategy is being developed by the Region of Waterloo Seniors Advisory Committee.  It is anticipated that the completed strategy will be presented to Regional Council for their consideration in spring 2014.

The Seniors Advisory Committee hosted a forum on November 5, 2012 to inform the development of the strategy. The forum brought together various seniors committees from across Waterloo Region, staff from the area municipalities and municipal councillors to assist the Seniors Advisory Committee in defining the characteristics of an age-friendly organization and to identify priority areas for the strategy.
