Develop and implement an action plan to make the Regions programs, services and workforce more accessible and responsive to our diverse community.

Final update (September 2014)
The Region of Waterloo’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategy was approved in June 2012 by Regional Council. A detailed implementation plan for each of the goal areas found within the strategy was developed. Concrete tools, training and resources have been created and will continue to be developed on an ongoing basis in order to understand the barriers and create meaningful solutions to improve inclusion of diverse populations in our services and in our workplace.

Examples of work completed to date include:

  • Quiet spaces for staff prayer were established in the three main buildings.
  • 10 dialogues on diversity were held with the community to identify and address barriers when working with various groups including: immigrants; lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered; people living with disabilities; black youth; people experiencing in poverty; older adults and refugees.   Over 1000 people have attended the dialogues.
  • Diversity and inclusion training was provided for management and front line staff.
  • Diversity and inclusion information was embedded into the Management Leadership Development Program, the New Employee Orientation Program, Service excellence and in Respect in the Workplace Training.
  • Self awareness lens and recruitment and selection lens are posted on the internal portal for all staff.
  • Bias awareness training has been piloted and revised.
  • Tools and resources were developed for staff in order to improve access to Regional services.

Progress Update (September 2013)

The planning work to develop a Diversity and Inclusion Strategy began in September 2010 and an overview of work completed to date was provided to Council in March 2012 (CA-12-004). The Strategy was based on extensive public and staff consultation which was directly integrated and aligned with the Region’s 2011-2014 strategic planning process (CA-10-007). The Region of Waterloo’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategy was approved in June 2012 by Regional Council.

A detailed implementation plan for each of the goal areas found within the strategy has been developed. Milestones and progress indicators were established on actions occuring in 2013 and 2014 in order to monitor success and challenges with the implementation of activities. Concrete tools and resources have been created and will continue to be created on an ongoing basis in order to understand the barriers and create meaningful solutions to improve inclusion of diverse populations in our programs and in our workplace. A new structure for governance is currenlty being developed as the steering team has finished their 3 year term.

Progress Update (January 2013)

A Diversity and Inclusion Strategy was developed and approved by Regional Council in June 2012 in order to identify actions that will make the Region's programs, services and workforce more accessible and responsive to our diverse community.  

Through this project the Region is also working to attract and retain a skilled, talented and diverse workforce in order to better understand the needs of our community.
