Progress has been made to increase awareness of Council activities and opportunities for citizens to interact with members of Regional Council in a number of ways, including:

  • The Regional Chair and Regional Councillors continue to be invited to and attend an increasing number of community events.
  • Members of Regional Council in 2014 made presentations to:
  • Local university students.
  • Various elementary schools on civic engagement.
  • Community groups.
  • Members of Regional Council continue to submit articles for publication in community newspapers.
  • Members of Regional Council continue to attend and engage with citizens and groups at Region public consultation centres.

Progress Update (September 2013)

Progress continues on increasing public awareness of Council activities and providing more opportunities for citizens to interact with members of Regional Council. In addition to Council and Committee meetings, public meetings and Regional events hosted by the Region of Waterloo, Members of Council have been invited to 124 local events by community agencies and organizations in 2013 (as of Sept. 2013, Councillors were able to attend and participate in approximately 90% of these events).

Members of Council continue to submit and publish articles on topics of Regional interest in community newspapers on a regular basis.

Progress Update (January 2013)

Progress has been made to increase awareness of Council activities and opportunities for citizens to interact with members of Regional Council in a number of ways, including:  

In 2011, the Region hosted two all-Council meetings with area Councillors. In May 2012, local media were invited to participate in a Council tour of Regional facilities..  Policies were implemented in 2011 that will provide more flexibility to Members of Council to attend a greater number of community events. 

Articles by Members of Council are also being published in community newspapers on a regular basis and Councillors' external websites and social media pages (where applicable) have been linked to their Regional web pages.

Progress Indicators

  • Improved public awareness of the levels of local government and who does what.             
  • Increased communication from the public to council.                                                                    
  • Staff knowledge of council members. 
  • More invitations and presence and presentations at community events by Council.
