5.6.2

Develop a corporate volunteer management strategy and work plan.

greenstatusFinal update (September 2014)
In late 2012, work began on the development of a Corporate Volunteer and Placement Guidelines manual. This is the first step in developing a corporate volunteer management strategy and work plan. Volunteer binder complete with policies and tools has been developed and is currently being circulated for feedback.  Volunteer Coordinators across the organization identified priority policies and are conducting a gap analysis regarding their compliance.  A volunteer strategy for the organization is currently under development. Tools are being piloted with volunteer coordinators, actions for the strategy need to be finalized, and taken to the Corporate Leadership Team for final approval.

The purpose of the strategy is to set goals and priorities for volunteer management across the organization. The goals and priorities will assist the Region's volunteer programs in achieving and maintaining consistent organizational standards, co-ordination and support for volunteers across the organization and encourage staff to volunteer.

Progress Update (September 2013)

This strategic initiative is to develop an organization-wide volunteer strategy. Phase 1 of the initiative will address the highest priority need, which is to create a Volunteer Policy Manual to be used by all programs that engage volunteers. Project governance and a staff resource have been established, and work will begin in mid-September. Following the policy development, a work plan to address broader volunteer issues will be created.

Progress Update (January 2013)

Project governance and staff resources have been established and work has begun.  Following policy development, a work plan to address broader volunteer issues will be created.

The strategy development will carefully consider the factors affecting volunteers and their role, and strategically plan for the future. A phased work plan will be developed along with this strategy which will identify the staff resources necessary to implement the tasks outlined in the work plan.

The Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement contains principles that articulate the reciprocal relationship between the organization and its volunteers, as well as organizational standards.  This code could help guide the development of the volunteer strategy and work plan.
